Special rates from budget hotels to 5 star hotels in Amsterdam go right along with all the things to do in Amsterdam. You are only limited by your imagination and your pocketbook. Legalization of drugs and prostitution make amsterdam vacations pretty exciting. Amsterdam night life is a living entity. Even in the earlier days, there was always a throbbing pulse about the city. The Amsterdam redlight district brought tourists of both sexes to ogle and stare and even point...and yes, there are honest to goodness red lights in the red light district. Not too hard to figure out where the term comes from, with window after full-length window, glowing with red light! Rather like a display window in a department store. Subject matter, however, just a little different...instead of mannequins, these are real live girls in various forms of undress, posed ready and waiting! you can't miss the Red Light district, it may be too conveniently located, since you can stumble upon it from almost any direction.

An Amsterdam vacation begins many times right in the Amsterdam airport, at least for this writer. It is the one Duty Free that's worthwhile. I've found wonderful things, I got my first 5X magnifying mirror at Schipol airport. Now of course, they are quite common...but your very first purchase in that airport should be a compass, because like Venice, you can get lost immediately. No rhyme or reason to the streets, so go armed with your compass!

If you choose to go into the city by taxi, be prepared. We live in New York and thought we had taken every wild and crazy taxi ride, wrong! The Mercedes taxi drivers are real combatants, hold on!

On the left, Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky, our favorite 5 star hotel in Amsterdam! Do be sure and check our hotel rates Amsterdam, we know you'll be pleased with selection of Amsterdam accommodation and rates...you don't have to stay at the Krasnapolsky. you can choose a budget hotel and still get a quality accommodation. Trust our star rating system.

The city is a marvel of architecture, canals and no Amsterdam vacation would be complete without a visit to Van Gogh museum a premier spot to visit.

There's a great flea market (or swap meet, as it is called in the USA) on Weesperplein. Go for the art and the antiques. Try a small pedal boat on the canals, (if you're in good enough shape). Try the Tropical Museum, dedicated to the Dutch colonial past, you'll want to go more than once. Anne-Frank House 263 Prinsengracht, brings history to life, make sure you watch the documentary. For the best free show in town - go to Leidseplein on any night! Enjoy the Hard Rock Cafe, fast food chains and other clubs. At night this place is full of artists, jugglers, and  fire-eaters. Amsterdam cafes are part of the landscape, the Dutch love their good times. SOL DJ Cafe at #18 Rembrandtplein is a great place for music, dancing the night away with outgoing people from all over the world.

The Joods Historisch Museum is houses a wonderful collection of Jewish art and artifacts, and provides an interesting look at the contributions of Jews to industry in the Netherlands. Best time to go...June through August, oh and it stays light until midnight at this time of year.

Amsterdam Travel Tips and City Facts
Getting from the airport to town and exploring the city

Taxis into town take approximately 30 minutes, available outside the terminal. A less expensive alternative is the train which leaves every 15 minutes during the day and roughly once an hour from midnight to six in the morning. The journey takes about 15 minutes. Many of the more exclusive hotels may be able to arrange for a car to meet you at the airport. This would be the most comfortable option, but would have to be arranged before arrival with the hotel. Around Town by Public Transport The local public transport system is cheap and a good way of getting around. Tickets cover bus, tram and metro journeys, and can be bought from automatic dispensers on the metro, from bus and tram drivers, and from many news stands.
